Unfortunately, the Punch Tavern is only half the pub it used to be. For some reason, hard to work out at the moment, the pub was divided in two a few years ago. Now only half of the magnificent Victorian interior is accessible by the punters. A real shame, it was one of the great Fleet Street pubs when Fleet Street was the centre of journalistic excellence (or otherwise) in the UK. It still does a pretty decent pint of Guinness but the other beer is not very remarkable. Always busy, a Friday evening visit saw this one's resources stretched to the limit. A recent innovation on the food front has established what's been described as "a self service gastropub", which translated means "buffet". Pop in on a quieter night to admire what's left of the interior and ponder what's now on the other side of the wall on your right as you enter.
