picture of CorinthianSome classic city buildings have been beaten into submission by conversions, but this magnificent Victorian building, which was originally a bank and latterly the High Court, seems to be in its element in its new guise, taking a confidently modern approach to housing bars in the massive classical hall and on other floors. The lite bar may be the breathtaking centre piece, and is where most of the action goes on, though on our visit, it was quiet and uncrowded, still retaining a warm atmosphere. The service was prompt and friendly, and though they have a few draft beers on offer, the temptation is to get stuck into the cocktail list. There are other bars in the building too, including a piano bar which remained open even as the main bar was shutting for the night. A stylish restaurant and regular DJ sessions ensure there something here for everyone. For a place that could easily slip into the arrogant or overpriced bracket - they seem to have avoided both pitfalls adeptly, though a weekend visit is needed to check the punters avoid similar failings.
