As the name suggests, once upon a time this part of London had strong ties to the whaling industry. Captain Ahabs are thin on the ground around Greenland Dock these days, and it's doubtful a trusty harpoon skewered the fish that featured on this one's menu. And that food choice gives a indication of what the pub is like: a (very) tidied up affair which attracts the nearby flat-dwelling twenty and thirty-somethings. Thankfully, it's not a gastropub: this is a pub first and foremost, and one which does feel of a certain age. Certainly one to pick off should you be attempting this stretch of the Thames Path, the Ship & Whale is also one of the better Shepherd Neame pubs we've come across of late: good beer, efficient staff.
