DJ bars are not a rare commodity in Islington but their enduring popularity proves that they're what the public in these parts wants. The Salmon and Compass, open every day from 5pm, comfortably caters for this market and does it well. The ground floor, conforming to the usual stripped-out look, has a splattering of seats around the edge with a large empty space in front of the bar for standing, then maybe a couple of drinks later, dancing. The funk, hip hop and electro tunes on our visit didn't inspire or offend, but full marks for playing it loud enough to create a club vibe without rendering conversation impossible. With a 2am licence on six days of the week it is a handy late night option, but be prepared to pay a small entrance fee after 9pm on a weekend. It boasts of the availability of 15 different beers, including the bottled variety, while the bar staff can also knock-up a cocktail for you.
