picture of RocketWhen we first reviewed the Rocket, a couple of years ago, there were rather too many shortcomings for us to wholeheartedly recommend it, but a change of management and a substantial refurbishment has transformed the place. The interior still has the red walls that characterised the old place and the large bar is still there, but the furniture and fittings have been upgraded - from the (now traditional, it seems) mishmash of unmatched student bedsit furniture, to a mix of Louis XIV-style and wicker chairs with upholstered benches along the walls. The overall effect is simple and sophisticated and it complements the food and drink on offer - good beer, decent wine and good, simple food. Prices are not cheap, but neither are they expensive, for the quality, there's also a dedicated area for more serious dining in a separate room. Service was also an issue last time around, but now there appears to be more than enough people behind the bar to meet the needs of the punter and they're polite and friendly with it. The terrace outside, must be one of the most comfortable of any London pub, with squashy benches positioned under a large awning down one side of the pub - an obvious draw for those who have yet to kick the smoking habit. Relaxed and civilised during the day, we've yet to experience the Rocket's new incarnation in the evening, but from what we've seen it should be good. Along with the George and Dragon, just up the road, we can now think of two good reasons for visiting Acton.

Decent, simple, modern pub food, not cheap, but the quality matches the price.
