Seasoned south London rail commuters will recognise this pub, having glimpsed it from a passing train on their way home. However, it seems unlikely that many have considered having a drink here. Skulking in the shadow of the railway viaduct that slices through much of this area, the Marquis of Wellington feels a bit off the beaten track (no pun intended), and the sound of regularly passing trains adds to its melancholy air. Perhaps this new venture will lighten the tone. On our Saturday visit, only a few punters were in - primarily for the racing on TV - and they didn't hang about for long. A digital jukebox, some hefty speakers and an offering of six shots for £10 perhaps offer a clue to the pub's nighttime vibe.
