picture of Royal GeorgeThis pub offers an oasis of calm near the relentless bustle of the Charing Cross Road, thanks to being ignored by the hordes passing the end of the short alleyway in which it hides. With debatable external charm, inside the decor combines wood panelling with kitsch touches - neon and fairy lights, retro furniture. It's no surprise the pub draws a trendy crowd from neighbouring Soho, as they seem well catered for but not to the detriment of less media-savvy punters. The pub had fairly predictable ales on when we were in last, namely Pride and IPA, and a fine selection of continental beers on draught such as Leffe, Hoegaarden, Budweiser, Staropramen, which probably suits the crowd. Staff are friendly and keep track of punters when there's a rush on. Food's a bit quirky, but well prepared and relatively inexpensive. You can do a lot worse around the West End.

Eating at the Royal George ... we last ate here on 16/4/2008

Range of pub grub - we particularly liked the fish-finger sandwich for under a fiver. Nice.
