The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester
FancyaPint?'s review...
It took a bit of persuading to get one of our party to enter the Smithfield Hotel, with his protests along the lines of it looking rougher than a sandpaper codpiece. After we edged around the pool table positioned just inside the front door and checked out our surroundings, his assessment proved to be harsh. True, it is not a thing of beauty, but we certainly didn't feel like we'd stumbled into somewhere we weren't welcome. Ale aficionados will be filled with glee by the selection of eight ales, including six guests, and its own Smithfield bitter which comes in at less than 2 pounds a pint. There is also a slightly strange open kitchen, which wouldn't look out of place in a house and could perhaps be described by an estate agent as "in need of modernization." Those used to frequenting gastropubs should be warned not to expect it to serve dishes such as venison in a red wine jus, though the deer will surely be happy. This sort of pub is becoming increasingly rare so enjoy it while you can.
