This old Truman's pub with a rather rare interior had been attempting to attract a new breed of younger drinker in the last couple of years and been doing a good job at it until it shut in 2010. The landlords blamed the pubco's pricing policies on its failure. As a pub hidden away on the back streets, we never expected it to open again, but it now has. It is very early days, but what we found on our quick bank holiday visit was a pub almost as we remember it. So indeed the lovely interior is almost all intact, save for the gantry around the bar which was removed by squatters, or so the cheery girl behind the bar told us. A group of older locals propped up at the bar and a few more newer Hoxton residents were sat out out in the large beer garden, which was being used to park a wonderful 1970s Orange Opel car on our visit. The one Shepherd Neame ale on tap was in good nick and the Aspalls went down nicely too. We don't know whether the new owners plan on carrying on the rota of live music and other events which drew in the crowds, but we'll certainly be back again to see how things are progressing.

How to find the The Stag's Head pub

Not really near to any tube (although that will change when the East London line extension opens), the pub is on a road just off the main Kingsland Road (served by several frequent bus routes) between Liverpool Street/Shoreditch and Dalston, just south of the Grand Union Canal and near a Turkish Mosque with a very tall minaret.
