Some towns are split by rivers, others perch on hills, or guard a convenient harbour. Croydon is all about the A323 motorway flyover, threading the centre like a major artery: which makes The Royal Standard, nestling underneath, right at the heart. We knew, as soon as we snuck inside, that this was our sort of pub. It's a genuine local boozer with most of the patrons gathered round the bar, and a few tables scattered in the remaining space. There is a fruity, dartboard, and TV screen (resolutely furled on our visit), but mainly this is a place to sit, drink, and be lulled by the gentle hum of old men in caps talking about fishing. Although in a sense unremarkable, this pub deserves its score due to the sheer joy of its unvarnished presence in the middle of what can be a depressing centre. Definitely warms the cockles.

Lovely pub, ideal for a thoughtful few pints over a chat with with mates. The garden is under the flyover to all intents and purposes but still pretty quiet. Good selection of well-kept Fullers ales and the odd guest beer, awesome range of salty snacks, friendly gaffer and staff.

How to find the The Royal Standard pub

Off the high street; as you walk, be sure to incant 'Croydon isn't that scary, the multi-storey car park does not frighten me, those people leaving Riley's snooker pub must be very friendly'. From East Croydon station, buses down the high street include the 119 and 466.
