Located on the corner of a quiet residential street, just a few metres away from Wandsworth Town railway station, is the Royal Standard. This pub has great potential to be a fabulous boozer but it fell short of the mark on our last visit, despite having plenty of golden opportunities. It's a small affair, there's a dartboard, a bit of sport on the telly and most apathetic drinkers are snared by the Alma Tavern just up the road, right opposite the station. On the day we came here though, it was squandering its chances. At 6pm, the thumping music inside was audible some streets away, the general atmosphere and ambience inside was one at the rowdier end of 'lively' with the "George Cross" brigade well-and-truly making themselves known and the choice of ales was limited to just one (Doom Bar) as the Pride was off. A disappointment after we'd heard a lot of good things. Let's hope that they were just having an off day.

Me and my girlfriend went here a few days ago (June 2010) and think its 4-pint rating was undeserved. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt seeing as it was the world cup, but the outside was bedecked in George Crosses, at 6pm you could hear the pub's stereo two streets away and they only had Doom Bar (good though it is) on draft. The clientelle were a bit 'George Crossy' and I felt a little bit as though I'd walked in on someone else's territory. Not a welcoming or cosy place to wile away some free afternoon hours. But i'm willing to concede that it is World Cup season and therefore it might not have been itself.
