When we heard that the Old Fire Station was under new management, we headed straight down there keen to see whether there had been an improvement its predecessor. We always thought that the building was a little odd to house a pub with its huge glass frontage, abattoir-style flooring and high ceilings (of course it used to house fire engines) so to create a welcoming drinking environment would always present a challenge. It would appear that its opening-week teething problems were just that as our recent visit was much more pleasant. It's smarter and more relaxed than before and even had us contemplating the possibility of an afternoon's session. Quite a turnaround. We're still hesitant to give this place more than a three pint rating due to a lack of atmosphere and true pub passion but they do however have 3 decent ales on pump - Adnam's, Sharp's and Brewdog, as well as a couple of Meantime offerings on tap (bit too cold and fizzy for our tastes) and lagers that lean towards the premium, classy end of things and they still appear to be serving good food (£5-15), and have a small patio out back for those al fresco moments.
