This gastropub's been in the press a great deal lately and, although we can see why, that isn't necessarily a recommendation for us as it appears they're hell-bent on putting the 'gastro' part into it. The tone of the evening was set when we walked through the door to discover that every table in the place was set for dinner. Well, almost every table - there was a low table in the corner with a couple of whicker sofas around it and several stools at that end of the bar, which were obviously meant for the non-eating patrons of the bar; these were duly full of rather plastered locals, which left us to stand by a wall next to the front door. The staff weren't remotely shirty with us for just coming in for a drink - they just didn't move to let us sit down, either, even though the pub was only about a third full. Sadly, this is just the sort of gastropub that puts our noses out of joint - it's not really a pub at all, just a restaurant that happens to serve decent beer (three on the taps, the Landlord was very nice). It is better during the day, as you can go in, have a drink and read the newspaper, but we're not sure when the tables suddenly turn into dining tables. Don't get us wrong, it's probably very good at what it does, but any place that advertises "venison scotch eggs" isn't really our cup of tea.

Well, things have obviously changed a bit since the review. The "simple" food has been replaced with such things as crispy pig's ear and trotter on toast and roe deer stewed in sloe gin. This is no bad thing as the food was really, properly top notch. Up there with some of the best restaurants I've eaten in in London.

Good atmosphere and enthusiastic if slightly sloppy service (broke the cork off in the wine and forgot a coke, but nothing too major).

Didn't get to check the ales but then it's really more of a place to go to eat than for boozing in. Thoroughly recommend though
