The Haggerston, Dalston
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Haggerston has been open for a while now and nicely settled as a popular, trendy hang-out. With a name that is either a nod to the area in which the pubs sits, or perhaps a resurrection of an old name for this Victorian pub, it was previously a late night dive called Uncle Sam's. It had been shut for a while before we discovered it was alive again as a, er, late night dive. From what we could ascertain through the dimly lit throng of bodies there isn't the most exciting of decoration - white tiling behind the sparse bar, exposed brickwork and a scattering of decrepit chairs and tables. Tight-jeaned Hoxtonites did their best to bop away to tunes spun by an anonymous DJ, but as it was heaving to capacity this wasn't always successful. Other entertainment makes an appearance on Sunday night, where we heard a jazz band playing away. Despite the crowds, it is a pretty relaxed venue, specially compared to the venues a little over a mile south in Shoreditch. Indeed, if entry fees, officious bouncers and longs queues are making those aforementioned venues hard work, jump on the bus and make for the Haggerston - a fun, late night pub.

came back to this pub after having two bad experiences in the past. I thought i would give it another chance. It was a Sunday afternoon and it looked cosy inside. Had a great time, until after spending a couple of hours in there and a decent amount of money at the bar me and three friends were asked to leave for 'talking too loudly' as someone at the bar had complained!! Couldn't believe it. We were being overly loud or loutish, literally just having a laugh and a good time. Obviously, a bit too good to be acceptable.
A nice evening spoilt (once again) by pretentious snobbery. Real shame.
