The Green, Farringdon
FancyaPint?'s review...
Being a pub is in the DNA of this establishment, as from 1720 to around 1920 it was a tavern called the Fox and French Horn. The Green opened in 2004 after the building had been used for various other purposes, including a restaurant, offices and workshops. The Green has an attractive exterior, and once inside you can view the comings and goings of Clerkenwell through the large windows. The interior is of the modern, stripped out variety and looks pretty good. The upstairs dining room is as big as the ground floor bar. At night the lights are turned right down, which gives the place a nice atmosphere. They have three real ales on tap, and we enjoyed a pint of Acorn Blonde on our visit. But we did have a major gripe with the food. Mains are available at around the £10-14 mark but are served in small portions. Unless you want to be hungry, or are dieting, you are expected to order additional 'sides' for around £3 a pop. Beef stew and mash sounded good, but the mash was described as 'only a garnish' - did we want to order extra potatoes with that? It seemed a crafty way to push up the cost of eating. Lots of benches on the pavement outside make this a good spot for post-work drinks in the summer.
