The Green Dragon, Croydon
FancyaPint?'s review...
Until recently a Hogshead, the Green Dragon is a relatively conventional-looking pub overlooking the age-old Surrey Street market, but wonderfully quirky in terms of atmosphere and fayre. It attracts a fairly young, alternative clientele - there are always a few upcoming live events in Croydon advertised on the walls, as well as in-house gigs - but it's also the kind of pub a middle-aged couple can sit and relax without feeling out of place. It stands out for its range of guest ales and ciders - Boxing Dog Strong Cider (Whitehead Brewery) , Morrissey Fox Blonde, Grasshopper Kentish Bitter, Over the Moon (Dark Star Brewing Co.), Sweet Lips (Springhead Brewery), and the wonderfully-named Rip Snorter (Hog's Back Brewery), the selection leading to the award of 2008 pub of the year for both Croydon Best Bar None and Croydon CAMRA. The menu is good value and pork-dominated, with several dishes being cooked in guest ale. It has an upstairs which is generally a little more sedate, not that downstairs is especially raucous. The Green Dragon is an unusual place, certainly unique in central Croydon, and worth a visit.

How to find the The Green Dragon pub
From East Croydon station (0.9 miles), head the length of George Street, past the junction with Park Lane (A212). At the end of George Street, take a left into the High Street. The pub is by the junction with Whitgift Street, on the right of the road. If travelling by Croydon Tramlink, alight at George Street station. Note that if driving, one-way/ parking restrictions abound in Croydon and you may need to take a long route round.
