When the The Great Northern Railway Tavern closed for a refurb, we were worried that the beautiful original features and etched glass would end up in a reclamation yard, or the skip. Now that it’s reopened we’re happy that our worries were unfounded. As such, this is still a very handsome pub, complete with a lovely back room, presumably once used for billiards, while the back garden is a work-in-progress. Understandably, it’s been given a ‘gastro’ treatment, so you have a re-rigour open kitchen and a small, reasonably priced menu. Presumably this is to move away from being a wet-led establishment and start appealing to the locals found in the architectural horror known as New River Village. However our visits indicate it’s still frequented by the regulars it had when it was an unreconstructed boozer. Everyone seems to know each other and converses by shouting rather than talking. The choice of beer is also poor. Although two ales are offered they come from the yawn-a-thon choice of London Pride and Green King IPA. The lagers are all of the bland mass-market variety, too. Decor wise, the comfy old bench seating in the front bar is still in place, but the tables are now either too high (like dining tables which swamp the area) or too low (like coffee tables – useless to eat from). A pretty pub it might be, but at the moment there is nothing which would encourage us to make the detour here; there are a number of places nearby which have better ambiance and drinks selection.

A lovely building with shabby but no chic fittings, I went to their supposed music night. What could have been a pleasant experience was totally ruined by a teeny- bop rock band (noise) that rather indulgently went on for 40 minutes and left you wondering why you had bothered. First duo up lady on a fiddle and chap on guitar had set the taste buds going and third on “Ghouls” where excellent, but cut short. I decided to leave before the final act, which I was assured where “worth staying for”, but I had to get going. What a shame, please promoters, sort out your running orders and keep to time so that everyone can have a good time. Perhaps think about a youth night for the lads and their dads rather than the fee going public. Will I go again - don't think so!

Was here last night and had a really good time! It has recently been refurbished and looks stunning inside (but has kept its old charm!). They have a really nice choice of wine and food which were at a good price (but they are also doing a great deal at the moment on food and wine to take advantage of). I recommend the Tavern Burger! Had some good music on and the staff were really friendly and helpful which was quite refreshing... definately going back!

Come and give the pub a new review. It has been under new management since 03/2009 and has improved in leaps and bounds since then.

From Turnpike Lane tube you need to catch a bus, or have a 10 minute walk. Out of the tube, find the bus stop on Turnpike Lane itself (opposite the Burger King) and either jump on the 144 bus for a couple of stops, or walk straight until you reach the pub on your right, set back slightly off the road. From Hornsey Train Station (WAGN) turn right and walk to the main road. The pub is over the road on the left.

The Great Northern Railway Tavern has been beautifully renovated and is open for business! Come down and meet Andrew and the team who will serve you with a smile. We have some great offers on at the moment including a £5 lunch menu (12-3pm) and 50% off ALL dishes on Monday (between 12-3/5-10pm). We have a range of food available, from sandwiches to warm and cold dishes - and let's not forget the Sunday Roast! We also have a handpicked selection of delicious wines and are aiming to have Guest Ales available in the near future. Starting in July, we will also begin our live music events - watch this space!
