The Famous Royal Oak, Muswell Hill
FancyaPint?'s review...
The genteel enclave of Muswell Hill isn't prime pub territory. Handy for a latte, ideal for a mocha, dodgy for a pint. Or so we thought until we stumbled upon this one. Easily the best pub in the area, this one's located down one of the roads that runs off the main Muswell Hill drag, and proves that W Martyn isn't the only business in these parts laying claim to old fashioned service and atmosphere. Here's a pub cut from traditional cloth, one that goes to show that serving a decent pint is only half the battle in making a great pub. A friendly landlord rules the roost here, bantering with regulars, welcoming newcomers. It's altogether a singular place, with a nature theme coming across in the décor: keep an eye out for Readers Digest Wildlife books, models of various birds and (best of all) a Cuckoo clock. The piano in the middle of the pub looks like it gets a bit of use too. This is one where a swift half can easily develop into a few hours worth of idle drinking. Lovely.
