The signs of the smartened up pub are in attendance, yet this one still stands out from your usual done up boozer. For a start, the stripped out look actually helps to accentuate the lovely original thirties wood panelling of the back bar, while the scattering of plants soften the corners nicely. Beers? A pretty good selection of Timothy Taylor Landlord, Harvey's Best, London Pride and Adnam's is usually in place. If that doesn't suffice, a small list of wines and of cocktails will probably do the job. Our latest Saturday night visit found it pleasantly busy, filled with a good cross-section of locals. Some were partaking in the selection of board games available - four sets of scrabble at the last count - while others were enjoying the bar snacks offered (paninis and pizza are the mainstay here). Despite being a bit of a trek to find the Elderfield its a worthwhile place to spend your time, especially as this part of Clapton is rather lacking in quality drinking establishments.

How to find the The Elderfield (ex The Eclipse) pub

Not the easiest one to chart a course to. Your nearest BR stations are Homerton and Hackney Central but then it's a good 10-15 minutes walk. Plenty of buses go up and down Lower Clapton Road though: 38, 48, 106, 236, 242, 253, 254. If you get off at the bottom of Lower Clapton Road, turn right up Powerscroft Road and then down Blurton Road to the pub. Shouldn't take much longer than 5 minutes from Lower Clapton Road to the pub.
