The Crown & Greyhound, Herne Hill
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Crown & Greyhound is famous old pub this and its handsome Victorian structure reflects the locale perfectly. It's all very clean and well-mannered, possibly a little too much so. There's plenty of room - enough for a conservatory, restaurant, function room and a spacious beer garden. Really there's not much to dislike. Only, it's a bit too pretty and well-mannered and can be somewhat lacking in atmosphere. On a summer weekend drinkers who don't particularly want children running around the tables may feel like a US cavalryman surrounded by whooping Apaches. You suspect many of the drinkers wouldn't appreciate the marvels of the nearby Picture Gallery and don't particularly like other types of pubs. Some might call it twee, I prefer to believe that somewhere in the landlord's attic there's a portrait of a degenerate, filthy boozer serving bad beer to a collection of old wrecks and losers.

We went to meet freinds with our 18 month year old son for a Sunday Carvery. Not impressed!! The idea of a Carvery is very simple, a choice of quality roast meats, with a selection of vegetable and gravy to which you help yourself! NOT HERE !! The meat was poor, the vegies were OK, and the gravy was awful, (it tasted herbie !?!). Also food was selected and plated for us - not my idea of a carvery. I thought a tenner was pricey, but for this it was rediculous !! - i made a comment to the staff, but no further action was taken - i won't be going back to eat!
Also the baby chair was still mucky - it had been wiped, but not sufficently !! - Parents will know this is quite common, but still NOT acceptable !!
That said - the bar is OK... Just don't eat there !!
We ate on Sunday 28th March

went there today. atmosphere on a cold day was welcoming. unfortunately, the carvery was very poor. roast pots great. roast carrots ok. other veg hard and almost uncooked. one of our guests took back the meat as it seemed to be slices of gristle. this was a consensus view in our group and not just one miserable patron. don't know whether it's an overworked/short stffed kitchen or worse, a bunch of people cooking who actually can't cook and plan for what must be an intense period of service. try a toby carvery?
