It seems in some quarters, that the once brave new world of stripped-out, IKEA-styled bars is beginning to fall out of fashion. As such, its no surprise to find a new, nicer pub in this upmarket enclave just off Queensway, where a Slug & Lettuce once was. This change is probably occurring because more discerning drinkers are after somewhere a little more interesting and unique these days, which is a shame, as the Commander is neither. However, sticking with the positives, it's a large, good-looking building, with an impressive original central bar, a pleasant back garden and a conservatory. There's also a 'table service' area, which is, we presume, predominantly where the gastropub fare is served. No real ales to sup, alas, and ramshackle service, to boot. We watched confusions over shifts (which left the bar empty at one point), running out of change and a man who wanted to be like Tom Cruise from 'Cocktail', but, in fact, ended up more like Frank Spencer. There's not a huge selection of fantastic pubs in the area and although the Commander doesn't change this, its OK for a couple of drinks.

How to find the The Commander pub

For Bayswater and Queensway the directions are the same: turn left out of the tube and walk down Queensway passed Whiteleys Shopping Centre to the junction with Westbourne Grove. Turn left and Hereford Road is the 5th on the right. The pub is on the left a short way up Hereford Road.
