There are a lot of god-awful looking pubs in Bethnal Green and this one looks about as uninviting as they come. Situated at the base of a tower block, this is not going to get many points for external beauty and for that reason alone we've walked past it hundreds of times. We wish we'd made the effort to pop in sooner. What might seem at first like a locals only pub is actually very welcoming to newbies. With only London Pride on draft (which was off when we went in) and standard lagers, CAMRA members may want to go elsewhere, but for people looking for a cheerful spot for a pint or two on the way home, this is a cracker. Add to this Sinatra on the jukebox plus the promise of Thursday night drag acts by the staff we will be definitely be going back!

How to find the The Carpenters Arms pub

From Bethnal Green Tube: When you come out of the tube, locate the Salmon and Ball on the Southwest corner - that's the part of Cambridge Heath Road you're looking for. With the Salmon and Ball on your right, head down the road. The pub's a few minutes down on the right. From Whitechapel: Turn left out of the station and carry on until you reach Cambridge Heath Road - you'll have the Blind Beggar behind you on one corner and the White Hart's on the other side. Turn left and the pub's up the road on the left.
