The Bird In Hand is a fairly traditional pub in the heart of Forest Hill, it does the basics well enough, with decent Guinness and one real ale, Courage Best, on the taps when we were in last. There was racing on the tellies sprinkled around the place, a pool table with pride of place in the back room and friendly bar staff. We thought it was an Irish bar when we got in, but as a breed, they rarely stretch to real ale, preferring the black stuff. The locals are reasonable enough and were enjoying the sunshine on a spring day. It's not bad for where it is, although it does suffer a bit when compared to the nearby Dartmouth Arms, although it's fairly clear their clientele doesn't overlap that much. If you're looking for basic drink and a place to watch the rugby or read the paper, this may well be the one for you.
