There used to be a Samuel Pepys here years ago, a typical (at the time) bare floorboards and oak beams place in a Victorian warehouse. We recall it was a dark place spread over a couple of floors, where the only view of the river was from a small balcony, which got laughably crowded in summer as people tried to get some air and a view (we used to watch them from the pub across the river). Now the warehouse has been completely redeveloped, retaining the original shell, and the Pepys has been reinstated in more or less the same place with a number of real improvements. The spit and sawdust atmosphere has been replaced with a brighter, more contemporary interior, there's a lot more light and there are a lot more views of the river (although there still is just the one balcony - and that's in the section of the bar that's diners only). The place is decent enough, there are a couple of (Cask Marque) real ales on the pumps with an average range of pumped beers and a range of bottled beers including a few Belgians. There's a pretty strong emphasis on food, wine and cocktails now, catering for the lunchtime punters from the City and this is probably what you'd come here for. Yes, you can come here just for a pint, but really this place is geared for the hungry City types and if you are, and you're bored of gambling with other people's money, there's a regular poker night.

Nice place - modern (which you wouldn't expect from the name) with a fantastic view. Good pizza too.
