This early Victorian boozer was built in 1856. The exterior of the building is really quite stunning, in pale yellow and black with Victorian lanterns. It's hard to believe that this place was derelict until a few years ago. Since then it's been renovated well, retaining the original bar and back bar, as well as its name. The interior has the feel of a proper pub, with green stained glass windows, banquettes and seating. It's not the biggest place. A few stuffed animal heads on the wall give the decor a slightly modern twist. We received a very friendly welcome for a few drinks at the bar and there was an interesting selection of locals drinking. The food looked good. They have four hand pumps for real ales, but only two are usually on. Due to size restrictions in the cellar, we were told, which seems fair enough. The London Pride and darker Adnam's Gunhill were well kept. A really nice Hackney pub and well worth a visit.

This is a really nice little local. Nesting tightly in a residential area on Forest Road, it's a great spot for a quiet pint in Hackney. They do some nice nibbles too.
