Mitre, Lancaster Gate
FancyaPint?'s review...
Given the rather drastic refits they've overseen in the last year or so, we were slightly concerned to see what Young's would do to the Mitre's Victorian interior. So, deep breaths were taken and thanks given, when we discovered that very little has been altered here: the fittings are still intact and the back room still has the air of restful repose that seems almost custom built for pipe smoking. This one's hardly a museum piece though, and on our last visit a steady band of local regulars were in situ at the bar. We've long held this one as one of the best pubs in the area, and the change of ownership hasn't altered our opinion: the food may be pricier than before and the upstairs now a diners-only space, but this one's very much a case of where if it ain't broke, don't change it (much).
