It's hard to imagine a pub being named after a politician these days. Would punters be queuing up to get into the 'Peter Mandelson' or keen to get down to the 'Baroness Thatcher' for a few after work? However, Lord John Russell was clearly a man of different standing, a former Prime Minister who earned himself a dedication from Charles Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities. This pub didn't start off life as a pub, but as a whisky merchant. Buyers would come to the long bar, which was then divided into cubicles, to sample the goods prior to purchase. Although no longer specialising in Scottish wines, the owners have put the establishment's long bar and huge cellar to good use. We counted more than fifteen draft beers available on our visit, including a fantastic selection of well-kept real ales. Agreeable staff help give the place a warm and unpretentious air, which attracts a mixed and friendly clientele. Pub grub was available, which looked pretty good. All in all, well worth a visit.

Laid back atmosphere, a brilliant range of draught selection (Budweiser did it for me) and a lovely barmaid playing some exquisite French film music. Very well worth a visit.
