The Lord Holmesdale (believed to be named after the local MP in the 1860s, one Viscount Holmesdale - note that the road name is spelt without an "l") seems always to have had a particularly poor reputation to bear in Bromley. "Intimidating" and "unfriendly" are just two of the adjectives we have heard in the past, and its setting doesn't help - located in Widmore, a rather scruffy kind of no-man's-land between Bromley and Bickley, the pub is overlooked by a gasometer, flanked by a car wash, has a large Tesco's almost opposite, and is only a couple of turnings away from the unlovely Waldo Road council rubbish tip. On the evidence of our visit, however, we suspect it's partly a case of give-a-dog-a-bad-name. We were addressed as "Sir" and complimented on our choice of Ruddles (which was pretty well-kept, although not the cheapest at three pounds), since every other punter was, with the exception of the barman - who seemed to have his own pint on the go - drinking lager. What's more, we found the regulars - who were all male except for one brave lass - to be polite and cheerful: we were told "after you, mate" with a broad smile on more than one occasion. Decor-wise, it's recently been refurbished but it's still a little bland: decked out in bright white, it's not the prettiest. There's a small beer patio which is pleasant enough, with a BBQ in the corner (in fact, a "free BBQ - all welcome" was advertised on our visit, though sadly for the next afternoon). The music was pretty loud, as was the banter, so don't go if you want a quiet drink - and indeed it may well get rowdier later on - but we were pleasantly surprised by this place and, on the evidence we saw, feel it well-deserving of a two-pint rating.
