A board on the exterior wall of the Lighterman proclaims that it is a traditional East End hostelry', and, geographic qualms aside, this is pretty much, more or less, what it is. A down-to-earth and welcoming local of a kind that is pitifully rare nowadays, particularly on peripheral, postwar, housing estates like Thames View.

It's not really that easy to get here froma tube station- the walk from Upney is disrupted by the A13 and railway lines. The easiest way to get here is to get the 369 bus, bound for the Thames View Estate, from opposite Barking tube and rail station. You'll see the pub on your left fairly soon after the bus turns down Bastable Avenue, and there's a bus stop nearby.
