Crown & Sceptre, Fitzrovia
FancyaPint?'s review...
A while ago, the Crown & Sceptre underwent a modest transformation changing it from a mostly vertical drinking experience, to the much more loungey style of interior we've come to expect from M&B pubs. The booze is pretty much as it was, with a few real ales on the hand pumps (e.g. Pride) and Continental beers on tap, a decent wine list and plenty of spirits if you're in need of the hard stuff. There's also the occasional, cider and/or beer festival, should your palette feel a little jaded. With the interior changes and a renewed emphasis on food, it's no longer the hardcore booze and sport pub it long ago once was (although it's pretty hectic towards the end of the week, in the evenings) and, given the changes happening in the area - moving upmarket and more residential, it's probably a wise move. The Weekday evenings media and rag trade crowd probably don't notice the difference, but at quieter times (afternoons, usually) it's a welcome improvement. A handy spot for recovering from shopping expeditions to the seething cauldron of Oxford Street.
