With the old name proudly emblazoned on the exterior, it's relief that the new owners of what was recently Shackology, have seen sense and changed it back to the Crown & Anchor (in any case it was an incredibly naff monicker). And, despite the giant Young's sign on the (grade II listed) exterior the pub, it is independent. However, there was Young's bitter on a solitary hand pump when we were last in - the rest of the beers being mainly gas-pumped lagers, Spanish fizz Sagres being a feature. The interior is pretty stripped-out, bare boards, wooden furniture etc, but there are non of the quirky, cosy features and soft furnishings, beloved of M&B pubs, that soften the hardness. In its new incarnation the Crown & Anchor is trying hard to catch the punters with comedy nights, quizzes and free WiFi and gastrofood, naturally. it may be a case of early days, but for now the Crown and Anchor's a rather too spare experience for us. We'll keep an eye on it though, you never know, the atmosphere might warm up a little.

Whilst this place was grim as a grim place in it's previous, short lived, life of Shackology (what?) I don't see a vast improvement now that they've got a new (old) name back up outside. It's staffed by 'studenty' youngsters who, if they can be bothered to serve you, don't really understand the art that is good bar-tending and will destroy most drinks on pouring.

It's difficult to understand how a bar can get it so wrong; you only have to look at the Roebuck for a winning set-up.
