Old Cross Tavern, Hertford
FancyaPint?'s review...
There are a fair few good pubs in Hertford, but if you were to ask a CAMRA member where the best pub is, they will probably point you in the direction of the Old Cross Tavern. Once through the anonymous-looking front door, you'll find a relatively small pub, decorated in a light, but slightly shabby style. The walls are lined with beer bottle filled cabinets and the overall feel is comfortable. There isn't a huge amount of seating but get there early enough and you can happily be ensconced near the open fire for a cosy evening. But it's behind the bar that you realise why that CAMRA member pointed you this way, as unsurprisingly you'll find a great selection of ales, along with an enviable list of continental beers. And perhaps we missed them, but the generic mass market lagers were not in evidence. Service was efficient and friendly, although asking for a pint of Oscar Wilde mild received the cautionary advice "it's a dark mild, you know". We didn't quite fit the demographic of the pub (predominately older) but we'll give it the benefit of the doubt that they were being helpful rather than patronising. Either way, a good pub deserving of a solid four pint rating.

Excellent pub this in nice old St Andrews Street. Always a good selection of hand pulls and friendly staff and regulars. Real fire as well. You can do a good fireplace crawl between this, the Old Barge and the White Horse in winter. They're both excellent as well.
Anyway, top pub.
