Unless it forms part of your route home there are relatively few reasons to traverse Harold Street, but the Volunteer must provide the best excuse. Catering for a mainly local crowd, it is a simple affair but always seems a pleasant spot for a pint. The door opens straight into the main bar, which then leads on to a further room at the back. Cider and ale drinkers are well catered for, while the good value food is a bonus. If we were to have a grumble it would be about the toilets, which can only be accessed by going outside. During the winter months or an apocalyptic storm this isn't going to bring a smile to anyone's face, apart from those with colostomy bags who can stay in the warm. Still, we think its worth a detour from the centre of town.
