The Marquis of Granby, Epsom
FancyaPint?'s review...
What's the opposite of a blot on the landscape? What's the noun for a bit of sheer delight leaping out from mundanity? Whatever it is, it applies to this absolutely cracking pub. The Marquis of Granby is a biggish, almost rambling place with a good mix of formal tables and chairs, elegantly battered sofas and settees laid out both in open areas and inviting alcoves which just beg you to while the day away with someone you shouldn't while the day away with. The intelligent, just-the right-level background music segues seamlessly from Neil Young's Harvest, to Come Together and then onto more 60's gold. Around 20 pumps are in action - we've seen Adnam's, Doom Bar and Pride among the bitters, along with, for example Leffe and Amstel while a special treat for the current Mrs Dino was the unusual sight of Fruli (30% strawberry juice in case you wondered) on draft - and at less than four quid a pint. There's a formidable selection of bottled alternatives, a lengthy and well-priced wine list and even a decent choice of malt whiskies. On top of this the bar staff know their products and can guide you through their extensive range with great skill. A lost art! And, as the man said, there's more. Gourmet crisps are available, delicious mixed nuts in various tempting flavours are served by the glass full - and hygienically - from big jars. The food menu is interesting and good value - ranging from sirloin steak at under a tenner to fish finger baps at 3.75. We had the cheese & bacon burgers and they were spot on. We also noticed that they sell small tapas-style dishes for about 4 each or 3 for a tenner - something we've not seen in a pub in these parts before. A collection of games is available to borrow from behind the bar. This really is how pubs should be. We'd probably go to the full 5 pint rating - rare praise indeed for a new entry - were it not that, so far, we've only experienced day times. Then we've witnessed an easy, comfortable atmosphere with old and young, suits and jeans, acting like grown ups being served great food and drink by pleasant staff. We're told that the Marquis - which does have an over 21s, no football colours, track suits etc policy - is the only pub on the High Street which doesn't have (because it doesn't need) a doorman on Friday and Saturday nights. Although by any sensible standard the Marquis is not expensive, the superior alimentations and thus pricing should be enough to keep those who simply want to get tanked up, fight and vomit (ah, the good old days) doing that at the handy selection of nearby, cheaper alternatives. Long may it continue.

My partner felt like going for a nice summers day pint today. On going to this place he got served a beer and then felt like another one! On trying to get his second pint he was refused service due to his english polo shirt. Not only does this seem ludicrous given that he had already been served once but the way in which it was dealt with was extremely dissatisfying. Staff were extremely rude.
On asking to just simply have this pint in the garden and then leave he was told 'no thats just more visible'.
I wouldn't bother with this place unless you know a member of staff. We have been there before and found them rude and disinterested in customers apart from their mates at the end of the bar.
As for the other comments on student pub, I fully agree! Tatty grot hole that won't be recieving custom from us or friends anymore!

Exit Epsom station left and immediately turn right by the Co-op, down a few yards to the High Street and turn right and the pub is a few hundred yards away, tucked back a few steps from the main drag on the right hand side.
