No longer a Beefeater but a Toby Carvery, the Crown hasn't really changed a great deal since its reinvention. The layout is basically the same, and the change of ownership amounts to little more than a rebranding. Sensibly, they've retained the name (unusual for Toby) since this establishment has been so known to several generations of Bromleians. The range of drinks isn't too bad, though, given the obvious emphasis on food - Toby Cask Ale is the pick at a very reasonable £1.85, with London Pride, many lagers including Coors, and Bulmers cider all on tap. There's a separate area which, we would guess from the lack of menus, is intended to be the "drinking" area. On our visit the owners had got into the festive swing early, with full decorations and a large tree already in place. We must mention the smell - a somewhat pungent odour (mainly of roast meat) which hits you as soon as you approach the bar, and which is rather off-putting. If drinking, we suggest you sit as far away from the carvery as possible. There's a decent amount of seating at the front which generates a good atmosphere in the warmer months (although the A21 spoils this a little) and there is a lawn with a few seats round the back. Given the emphasis on food, we'll return in due course and give the grub a go.
